Is blonde hair with black underneath still in style?

Right now I have brown with blonde highlights. I want to do something different, but I don't know what. I've been thinking about blonde with black underneath, but I'm worried about a few things. First of all I'm worried that it's out of style. I didn't want it when it was in style because EVERYONE had it, but don't know if that phase is over with. Second I'm worried that the blonde on top will look weird. I've never had BLONDE hair. I've had LOTS of blonde highlights that looked like the full color, but thats about it. Any suggestions. And please, no answers like "if you don't know what you want don't color it" . . .It's not a decision to have a baby, it's hair. . .
