I opened the compost and white spores came out.?

I have now added grass cuttings. It looked like furry cotton wool. I have potatoes growing in the compost and was worried about eating them. Also normally there are hundreds of worms but did not see any at the top where they normally are to be found. Can anyone tell me if its ok?
